Your PetSafe Smart Feed is offline. Who checks the bowl?
Wi-Fi loss and power loss need different responses. Build the human handover around the actual feeder.
First, identify the feeder
This guide concerns the PetSafe Smart Feed Automatic Dog and Cat Feeder, 2nd Generation, model PFD00-16828. It is a documentation-based guide, not a reliability test. Do not apply its behavior to another PetSafe feeder simply because the names look similar.
PetSafe’s product page specifies a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection and an AC adapter, with optional backup using four D-cell alkaline batteries. It can schedule up to 12 meals daily. Those features describe its controls; they do not show whether a particular pet ate.
If the internet connection disappears
PetSafe’s support instructions say an offline Smart Feed continues its previously scheduled feeds while it has power. Our practical reading: a missing connection is not, by itself, proof of a missed meal. It is also not proof that food reached the bowl.
Ask the person at home to check the actual feeder and the existing schedule before anyone sends an extra feed request. Keep one person responsible for the decision, and record what was served. Otherwise a well-meant remote correction can collide with a meal the machine already dispensed.
If power is the problem
The optional batteries are a separate fallback. PetSafe’s setup guide says four D cells can maintain scheduled feeding for up to seven days during an outage. That is the manufacturer’s statement, not a tested duration for your unit or batteries.
Before relying on that feature, identify whether batteries are installed and follow the exact setup instructions. Assign somebody to the physical check if the household is away. Do not infer that a device is still powered just because an earlier notification arrived.

Do not reset away the evidence
PetSafe warns that a factory reset erases settings and programming. Record the existing schedule and follow the manufacturer’s current troubleshooting sequence before considering that step. A reset can create a new setup job at the exact moment the household needs a clear feeding handover.
