Housemates, one pet and a shared agreement
Make responsibilities explicit without turning the home into an instruction manual.
Start with consent and availability
Ask who is agreeing to which responsibility. Living with a pet does not automatically make every housemate a carer. Record the usual person, backup and the limits of each person’s availability.
Use these conversation prompts
- Which jobs are shared, and which belong to one person?
- Who buys supplies and how are agreed costs handled?
- What counts as accepting a handover?
- Which spaces and storage areas are shared?
- Who contacts the veterinary team about a concern?
- What changes if somebody moves out or changes schedule?
Write a short working agreement
Use a private note with the task, person and acknowledgment method. Keep the actual professional care plan separate and available to authorized carers. Do not turn a housemate agreement into an improvised medical or legal document.
Review a missed handover
In a fictional example, one person sends “can you feed tonight?” and leaves before receiving a reply. The job has not been transferred. Agree that the sender remains responsible for securing a confirmed backup. Review the process after a real misunderstanding and change the instruction that caused it.
